Who are we hiring?
The Manager, Lighting Systems is responsible for the day-to-day operations management, maintenance, and project execution of the entertainment and architectural lighting systems within the Madison Square Garden Arena and any ancillary spaces.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Technical Operations, the Manager will support the integration of show design and programming provided by NY Knicks and NY Rangers Event Presentation, event production, and visiting lighting designers, translating creative intent into safe, repeatable execution on house systems.
This position includes being in rotation as the Technical Operations Manager on Duty for events in the Arena. The Technical Operations MOD will provide support to arena staff on AV and technical systems and will directly interface with other company representatives as well as company SVP & EVP's as needed.
What will you do?
- Manage the day-to-day operation, preventative maintenance, and repair of all entertainment and architectural lighting systems within the Arena and all ancillary spaces, scheduling all work around a demanding event calendar.
- The Manager will oversee the operation, programming, maintenance, and repair of house lighting systems, including but not limited to control systems, automated and conventional fixtures, followspots, LED and architectural lighting, dimming, and associated data and power distribution. The Manager will also direct any outside contractors and technical labor required to operate, maintain, and support these systems.
- Serve as the technical owner of the lighting control platforms, including console configuration, show file management, archiving, version control, and system backups.
- Support the integration of show design and programming provided by Event Presentation, event production, and any visiting designers. This includes but is not limited to show file load-in, patch and fixture coordination, focus, rehearsal support, and event execution.
- The Manager collaborates with technical teams across departments and divisions to strategically prioritize event needs, optimize resource allocation, and maximize labor productivity in support of more than 180 annual events. Will interface with GardenVision, Event Presentation, MSG Networks, and peers in Engineering, Technical Operations and Capital Projects etc.
- Program and maintain house looks, presets, and cues for Knicks and Rangers games, concerts, special events, and architectural and exterior lighting scenes.
- Manage lighting projects from scope through closeout: develop requirements, coordinate vendors and integrators, review submittals and drawings, oversee installation and commissioning, and validate as-built documentation.
- Maintain accurate system documentation, including plots, patch and paperwork, network topology, fixture and spares inventory, and standard operating procedures.
- Provide exceptional experiences for our guests, partners, and team members, including by adhering to our appearance and presentation guidelines while on-site.
- Have working knowledge of the following systems:
- Arena: entertainment and architectural lighting control, house and production rigs, automated fixtures, followspots, LED cove and accent lighting, dimming and power distribution, DMX/sACN lighting networks, and lighting positions on the center-hung, catwalks, and truss.
- Infosys Theater: Lighting control, rig, and production lighting systems.
- Coordinate rigging, lifts, and fall-protection protocols required to safely access and service overhead fixtures and truss positions.
- Direct in-house and contracted lighting labor for events, maintenance windows, and projects, and coordinate call requirements in accordance with the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Assist in the planning and tracking of budgets related to lighting maintenance, spares and consumables, and event cost estimates including internal and 3rd party labor requirements.
- Identify and assist with Tech Ops capital project planning and execution for lighting fixture, control, and infrastructure replacement.
- The Manager will have direct supervision of Technical Operations lighting staff as appliable, and will indirectly supervise building electricians, lighting technicians and other back of house trades supporting lighting initiatives as required.
What do you need to succeed?
- 5+ years of progressive experience in entertainment lighting, venue technology, live event production, or a related field.
- Candidates who have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
- Hands-on experience operating, programming, and maintaining networked lighting control systems, both theatrical and architectural (ie: ETC Eos/Paradigm, grandMA, etc).
- Working knowledge of DMX, sACN and Art-Net, lighting network design, and systematic troubleshooting of control and data distribution.
- Experience maintaining automated and conventional fixtures, LED fixtures, followspots, dimming systems, and power distribution.
- Experience supporting live events and working with designers, event presentation, and production teams to execute show designs on tight timelines.
- Experience coordinating vendors and contractors on installation, service, and maintenance projects preferred.
- General familiarity with adjacent venue systems including audio (QSYS, Dante), LED video, and IPTV is a plus.
- Working knowledge of rigging and safety equipment and protocols (to be used for access and maintenance of venue systems and equipment)
- Familiarity with a Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and the ability to work effectively alongside a unionized workforce.
- Windows/PC proficient and experience using Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Professional and Bluebeam; drafting experience in AutoCAD or Vectorworks preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
- Well organized and detail oriented with an ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
- Extensive standing, walking, keyboard usage and general administrative duties
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule inclusive of weekends, nights and holidays required. May have split days off in a 27/4 environment.
- Must be able to meet a physical requirement of lifting up to 25lbs.
